Mexico is the key to the ATSC (and Zenith's) strategy of introducing HDTV to Latin America and the Carribean. The thinking goes, once Mexico embraces the ATSC digital standards, the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean will follow.

The soccer match to be broadcasted this weekend in Mexico will be shown in full HDTV splendor and listened to in Dolby 5.1 surround sound. biz.yahoo.com

This could be the catalyst which pushes the scales for Mexico to quickly adopt the ATSC standard.

The Latin America and Caribbean markets are almost as large as the US television market and Mexico has a very large base of affluent early adopters.

Having a very strong manufacturing presence in Mexico will help Zenith to reach the Mexican consumer, PROVIDED that, LGE agrees to allow Zenith to distribute the Zenith brand in Mexico. Presently, LGE exclusively distributes Zenith's products in both Mexico and Canada. Is this really in the best interests of Zenith?
