Hi Mike; Well CompUSA has a something going for it if they don't
blow it like radio shack did. The vertical thing you know, all in the
same shop. Remember I use to build boxes and I didn't quit because
there was huge profits..
I'm out of touch with so much of it now, but I can still see
some things coming that will cause most of this so called Tech
lead we are supposed to have to be another "Gone with the Wind".
I don't want to get started on how the lead actually was more of
a fluke than any genus of foresight by the great gurus, the GUI
resulted from some R/D money tossed at some hackers who worked
ignored in a back room for zerox, and the company blew it off.
It was stolen nice and legal by apple and then Gates figured out a nice and legal way to halfass duplicate it. Which was a chore as making it run on the sorryass Intel design; sure had it's problems, and still does.
Marketing and the tricks thereof pushed it to were it is today,
but it's not going to hold forever..there are things a coming.
Things that will make the great Intel no more than Zenith is,
do you remember when Zenith was American. If you can find one
look inside. The lead was a fluke, more luck than smart.
------------------------
Like I said last year selling this garbage to the Asians and China
is a joke..if anyone is going to capture a market over there it
will be Japan and Tiwan..they might buy a few trinkets just to
tear them apart and see how they work, <g>
The Japanese have just come up with a CPU of their own, it's
something like a hybrid; it has half RISC architecture , and that
type of CPU would always blow the pants off any intel. They
plan on making it cheap..and were they might not have an OS
that will suit America yet, I bet they are close to one for the
Chinese
How about $199 computers..that can do the job..with plug in expansion
For portable HDs, and R/W cds..and work on a TV screen.
Not little 64k type commadores..but real blow and go stuff,
Internet ready shoved into a box as small as a notebook.
Give em a few more years it's on the way.
----------------
People raving about xDLS hookups..and the end of modems as we
Now know them. I was too last year, but I'm not now, by the time it gets Deployed a wireless local loop unit will not only be cheaper,
it cuts out the telco..and you become one with the internet.
------------------
Have you ever wondered about why they have not built the cards to let
Your computer use your TV as a monitor ..no big mystery if you think
about it. Some old halfassed stuff has been around for years, but they
Could have any time they wanted to jacked that up and done away with
You having to buy a monitor. But why should they, after all they make
more money on the monitors, than the computers, at the OEM level.
Take the back off a Magnavox , don't tell me you thought
it was American ?
--------------------
Last on my last trip, guess who came to work as a mate, or
2nd captain As they now call them on the boat I was running.
A guy named Mike White, who was one of the startups at Gateway
Computers from the get go. <G> to long a story for this post.
In a nutshell he walked away from some big bucks just to have a
Life.
Jim

Also, CompUSA's own brand is contributing a lot to that store's sales. >>>

talking with compusa store management.......they hate the compusa brand pc because they LOSE money on them.......it is great for their mail order program but costs them money to push it at thestore....not quite sure all the reasons why....thats what i was told though....much more cost effective for them to toss out cpq, PB, CTX, HP etc on the shelf......think it has to with tying up there tech dept adn returns can be HUGE hassle
