The former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, cited the concept of compound interest to defend his position, noting that a “dollar stolen” from black Americans in the past required heavy financial investments to repair that wrong.

The United States paid reparations in blood in the Civil War. Okay, let's talk about compound interest. Union Army deaths in the Civil War exceeded 300,000. Total casualties exceeded 1,000,000. Let's put a dollar value on all the lives sacrificed to exterminate slavery. Add to that total value the compound interest on the value of those lives since then. Also consider that most of our population came to this country after that war and they are not culpable.

I think it would be very wise to call it even and get back to living life.
