Overnight (since 1900 hrs on Sunday 26) declared cases in China rose 21% from 2034 to 2454. Globally the increase was 2083 to 2511.

Fatalities have increased from 56 to 80 in same time period - all in China.

Increased infections were reported by Hong Kong (from 6 to 8), Taiwan (3 to 4), Thailand (7 to 8), South Korea (2 to 3), Japan (3 to 4) and North America (4 to 6).

The disease appears to be highly infectious. The Chinese authorities report that contagion can occur from contact with people who do not yet show symptoms of being ill or know they have been infected with the Coronavirus. This is different to SARS where only people showing symptoms were contagious

It is now know over one million people fled Wuhan just before the city was shut down. On top of that we have the risks associated with Chinese New Year and Spring Festival travel.

Both the above factors make control of the spread of the diseases more difficult.

The fatality rate remains low (3%) based on declared data and well below SARS (10% globally and 17% in Hong Kong). But the data is still catching up so measures of fatality and even infections are still unreliable, though getting better.

This crisis continues to be a risk for the global economy and markets - with a particular focus on Asia.

next update 1800 hrs HKT

The head of WHO has flown to Beijing. The CNY- spring holiday in China has been extended for 3 days. Premier Li Keqiang is Wuhan “leading the fight” against coronavirus. A small bomb has gone off at HK hospital (Caritas) and tear gas was used against demonstrators on each of the first two nights of CNY.
