OATS again...nice article in Barrons timely because OATS is reporting on Monday. Finally got in near the market close on Friday.

...Riding the crest of what is now a $12 billion a year health-food wave are the nation's only two pulicl traded natural-foods supermarket chains, Whole Foods and Wild Oats Markets. Though still tiny by thier big rivals' standards they're driving hard to expand across the country, both by opening stores and by acquiring existing ones. Sales are rising at nearly 30% a year and earnings are projected to grow even faster...

.....the two natural food stocks are selling at multiples that trail their expected earnings growth. "I'd agree our stock isn't chap." says Mackey (CFO of WFMI) Still, if anyone buys in now, I think they'll see gains well in excess of the S&P over the next five years.

....sales are expected to rise to around $310 million from $192 milliion with earnings up handsomely to about 97 cents a share up from 20 cents... In 1998, earnings are expected to rise 35% to about $1.32, followed by a further 33% jump in 1999 to about $1.75.
