I agree with your conclusion.

Right now I've got this stuck in my head: Considering that only 800 or so people died worldwide from SARs in 2002 and 10,000 have died thus far in the US from 'ordinary' flu, I'm wondering why the heck so many Americans are still succumbing to the flu? And why do we diminish our flu strains as 'typical' or 'ordinary'?

Perhaps a new perspective is in order.
