Just want to point out that I don't think it would have to be designed as a biological weapon to have been manmade. If manmade, there are legitimate, non-nefarious, reasons to take an animal corona virus and attempt to modify it so that is compatible with human infection. Understanding the cross species jumps which happen are key to predicting, preventing, and curing.

Corona strains jump back and forth between species and have been doing so for at least 10,000 years and possibly millions of years. It is kind of their thing and what makes them difficult to pin down.
