Coronavirus (N) update at 1100hrs HKT on Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020

Between 1030hrs HKT on Feb 5, 2020 and our last update yesterday at the same time:

1. The number of new confirmed cases globally totalled 3928 from 3137 during the previous 24 hrs. Total confirmed cases globally are now 24552.

2. In China Mainland new confirmed cases rose to 3886 from 3136. Total confirmed cases are 24324. Within China Mainland confirmed cases in Hubei Province total 16678 and total 7647 in all other regions. New cases outside Hubei rose 1140 in the last 24 hrs down from a level of about 2900 in the previous two days but up from a few hundred per day in the period before that since the beginning of the crisis. It would be wrong to assume these figures for China ex-Hubei prove the virus is under control. We believe they are considerably affected by data reporting catching up with reality. The effect of Spring Festival in spreading the virus is as yet unknown given 10-14 day incubation period.

3. There were 42 new case outside China Mainland up from 1. Total cases outside China Mainland are now 228. Sharp rises occurred in Japan (20 to 33 -due to arrival of an infected cruise ship), Germany (10 to 12), Thailand (19 to 25), South Korea (15 to 18), Hong Kong (15 to 18), Singapore (18 to 24), Macau (8 to 10), Malaysia (8 to 10). Belgium has its first confirmed case. Australia has one additional case (total now 13).

4. Globally fatalities rose from 492 to 427. Fatalities have risen to 490 from 425 in China Mainland. Hong Kong had its first fatality. The second fatality outside China Mainland was in Philippines on Feb 2.

5. The fatality rate globally has fallen from 2.07% to 2.00%.

6. A total of 911 of all confirmed cases globally have released from hospital compared the total of 664 yesterday. This represents 3.7% of confirmed cases.

The spread of the disease outside China is accelerating. The overnight number of new cases is at a high. It also spread to a new country: Belgium. But many countries with existing cases saw a marked acceleration (see (3) above.

The number of new cases confirmed daily by China continues to accelerate and the first derivative of the pace of acceleration (the rate of change in the rate of change of new confirmed cases) has rose overnight (from 220 on Feb 4 to 750 on Feb 5).

We have added to the database:
· Comparative statistical analysis of SARS and Coronavirus
· Data on recoveries globally
· Data on confirmed cases in all China Mainland Provinces and Administrative regions.
