My circle of church friends believe there was great wisdom behind the separation of church and state doctrine. The key part of the ENLIGHTENMENT was the separation of Church and State. The original Texas constitution banned Preachers from serving in the Government. Calvin, the founder of the Presbyterian Church, was in favor of burning heretics at the stake. One of the good parts of the Shia branch of Islam was that the Mullahs could not rule. Khemenei overruled that when he took over Iran and you can read the results.
