The budget should be balanced, the treasury refilled, public debt reduced, the arrogance of officialdom tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands curtailed, lest Rome become bankrupt.

Marcus Tullius Cicero
Enjoyed re-posting this quote :)

Politics and power have never been a clean business. Thousands of people have been murdered, over the centuries, right in the Roman Forum, over various “disagreements”. We are shocked by Nancy Pelosi’s stunt - but back in Rome, Julius Caesar once had a night pot emptied over the head of the great Cato - because of his habit of blocking legislation by engaging in endless filibusters.

Speaking of refilling the treasury... it happened more than once that they used “proscriptions” to kill rich people and confiscate their property in order to refill the treasury. They were no goodie-goodies.

Cicero himself was “sacrificed” by Octavian, whom he treated like a son, as a “good will gesture” while making a deal with two other Triumvirs - Anthony and Lepidus.

Politics sucks. Ditto for the current arrogant bunch who are going to blow up our monetary system. We just don’t know when.
