Well, we have the opportunity now to establish how reliable PC Data is at estimating pc game sales in the U.S. We have a data point. But how do we go about assessing the reliability of this data point? Perhaps after the fourth guarter results are in we will be able to determine not only how many copies were shipped (which is not what PC Data was reporting as I understand it) but how many were sold.

I try to determine the scale-up or scale down factors to apply to the numbers being compiled by field researchers and then apply this factor to future numbers that they report.

Wildman,

I'm sure you believe that channel checks are worthwhile. I Don't!
Unless a very large sampling is taken, then correlated, and matched
against other games on the market they are next to worthless. They
might have value to mislead someone who reads these posts
and causes them to buy a stock because several people reported
about successful store sales in their area. I did say to check
the resources and evaluate them for merit. That does include
both the formal Wedbushes and the informal Company PR person whose
job it is to put a SPIN on the info i.e. "PAX MET EXPECTATIONS"
but no mention of what the expectations were. I am not a pure
sceptic. I just like to temper enthusiasm with a healthy dose
of reality about research.

Thats all. There was nothing personal in my post that would suggest I was attacking anyone for there efforts. I simply was expressing my opinion. Like you, and me, everyone has an opinion and are entitled to it - no matter how right or wrong it may be.

Kevin

Wildman,
Your post about doing the leg work and checking out how things are doing at the local retail level certainly is in very close agreement with Peter Lynch's comments in his second book about investing. And he seemed to know something about the subject, judging from his tract record.

Vince
