Actually, a high p/e is still better than a loss! Check out MCOM Metricom, which sells Ricochet wireless internet access in San Francisco, Washington, and Seattle. They managed to loose over $4 per share in the last year and have already targeted their most lucrative markets based on density of surfers. There is a deal coming up that would transfer 4 million shares to a Vulcan venture capital company if they want them at $12 but I wonder if they are that dumb. Ricochet is a good idea but the hurdles necessary to put boxes on top of telephone poles limits its profitability. I wonder whether the same service could be provided using existing cellular or PCS infrastructures. With the number of shorted shares now over a million, maybe Vulcan will try to build a nice trap. The decision should come soon.
