The laws of thermodynamics: conservation of energy. Biologics, like atoms, will seek the lowest energy state for their degrees of freedom. If an energy source is easily obtained (lowest expenditure of energy), the organism will seek to exploit it over other, more difficult to exploit, energy sources.

Humans could have subsisted on whales, but it is a lot easier just to catch bass and rabbits.

It’s complicated... :)

Like Bill says, much if it is about energy. Trillions upon trillions of times a day the fibers in our muscles contract. How does it happen? It is known that when the chemical composition of a protein changes - it leads to a change in its physical shape. Whenever a certain molecule hooks up to the molecules of Myosin - it’s shape changes. As it does so, it hooks up to some spots on the opposing molecule, Actin - and this makes them actually physically move against each other. Many of them combined will cause muscle contraction.

Takes energy to create - and to attach - that molecule to Myosin. Energy - and size. Life is a nano-world - many things occurring at a very small scale.

Don’t ask me how it happens that we also think... that’s a tough one... :)

What animates this seemingly miraculous ability to adapt?

We know that:

The Universe is comprised of energy. That is all we have to deal with.

Life is a thermodynamic process that organizes energy. Like Newton's definition of Gravity, it's an operational definition, it tells us what it does, not what it is.

In our search for the source of the Universe, which we call God, This is as far as we have got. Using Religion, we have stopped looking. Using science, Sic Itur Ad Astra!
