Rich,

Here is an short article on x-ray lithography:
techweb.cmp.com

DPMI is mentioned in the context of bringing costs down, so maybe it's not competitive yet from the cost standpoint. Photomasks will still be used, but apparently x-ray requires that a shift be made from gold to tantalum. I'm not sure if this is necessary to lower costs or for technical reasons related to the optics.

PLAB and DPMI have always had a very high correlation of stock price movement; there is now a divergence, since PLAB has bottomed and started to move up a bit.

I don't know why DPMI trades lower than PLAB but possibly that DPMI has opns in Korea and said that impacted them (PR Dec97). PLAB may be more practiced at talking to the street.

Risks to xray are the same to all maskmakers, if it is real , they will need to support it. IMHO , xray is not near. Xray has always been the technology 2-4 yrs away for last 15-20yrs. The industry will not give up photons easily because of the economics. The industry keeps developing new optical techniques. (and yes I did read the previous post on xray)

Cymers lasers are associated with .25 micron steppers which are associated with the high end mask business which Hardinger said was growing part of the business.
