Wharfie,
At the start, JFK was sort of a nobody, and Carter, Bill Clinton, and Obama were, so that's not a problem.
Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas and a major player in the Democratic Party prior to his candidacy for president. He was even chosen to introduce Michael Dukakis during the 1988 Democratic National Convention. (That introduction, by the way, was infamous for being a rambling mess.)

JFK was born into a political family and became a House representative when he entered national politics. After that, he was twice elected as Senator before becoming president.

Obama, of course, was just a one-term senator, but he had a gift of oration and overcame great odds to beat the Clinton political machine back in 2008. And yes, he did have the support of the media, which he milked to great effect.

Compared to any of these three, Mayor Pete is a nobody. Even Amy is a three-time senator from Minnesota.
