(NYSE:ECI) today announced the signing of a $30 million agreement with DSC Communications Corporation (Nasdaq:DIGI). Under the terms of the agreement, DSC, serving as Excel's sole switch vendor, will deliver and install advanced switching platforms beginning this month and continuing into 1999. "After taking the time to fully analyze the characteristics and technology involved with the recently acquired Telco network, we were looking for a solution that would allow us to maximize the utilization of the existing network and allow us the greatest flexibility in rolling out new products and services while reducing costs as low as possible," said Jack McLaine, Excel president and COO. "This purchase allows us to meet these objectives." In addition, deployment of the DSC systems will significantly increase Excel network capacity and broaden service offerings to include Local Number Portability (LNP) which allows customers to retain their original number should they change local carriers. Utilizing DSC INfusion LSMS (Service Management System for LNP), Excel will also have full network management capability over the new LNP feature. "Scalability and flexible service provisioning were key factors in our decision to purchase DSC switching systems," said McLaine. "Added functionality will allow our network to keep up with our growing needs. This purchase falls in line with our network operations strategy following the Telco merger. By adding enhancements such as the DSC switching systems, we are closer to maximizing our investment in those facilities." Specifically, the DSC products include the MegaHub(R) 600E tandem switching systems as well as the elements from its intelligent network (IN) product line such as the DSC INfusion(TM) Signal Transfer Point (STP) W/2 systems, along with its LNP and INfusion LSMS applications.
