I personally don't think it is a good idea to have the sound on all the time via the headphones just because when something is always on it will eventually wear out but as far as headphone speakers they are designed differently than stereo speakers. I used to do the same thing until I bought an headphone DAC that has an on off switch. I think if I were you I would click on the sound icon in the task bar and mute the speakers when not in use so that sound that sometimes comes from automatic videos or whatever on websites does not play. Are we talking 3.5 mm jack or USB? It should not matter what it is. I have a sound bar hooked up to my laptop, 3.5 mm jack, I have no issues with that as well.
