Trump jabbers constantly about his truck-tax red-herring.

Why? Because he's trying to impress stupid people in the United States.

The US imposes a 2.5% import duty on imported autos, while the EU's import duty is 10%. That's something any negotiator could deal with - but instead Trump focuses on trucks and red-herrings.

Let's look at these cars imported from "Europe" rather than being produced in the US.

Most imported "European cars" are Land Rovers and Jaguars from the newly independent UK. Trump can talk to the EU about that all he prefers.

There's also China-owned Volvo cars.

All Trump can focus on are Audi and Porsche cars imported from Europe, rather than being built in the US. Audi could easily build a plant in the US, but Porsche aficionados are likely to prefer to pay an import tariff than purchase an American-made Porsche.

While Trump keeps his idiot bubble-heads frothing at the mouth about imported autos, there's an important reason he doesn't and cant' actually do anything in terms of auto tariffs.

The Chevy Corvette is 66% American or Canadian, with the balance imported.

The Mercedes C-class is 70% from the United States or Canada, as are the Honda Civic, Acura MDX, and Acura.

A big import tariff on foreign imports will hurt US automakers more than EU automakers.
