Yiwu:

The exact same story could be transmitted to China from the U.S. .

My wife & I have friends who moved to a new house last year. The
"rules of the neighborhood" (or whatever they are called...anyone here
live in a subdivision?), did not allow home owners to put up satellite
dishes. So, they could not install a dish.

I'm not saying that is what happened in China.... but I can understand
how a Chinese National visiting here could get the impression it was
illegal. Then, if he came by my house he'd think I was ignoring the
law.

Perhaps the BEST misconception I ever saw was the infamous U.S. toll
booth. Anyone could set up a camera and record how "American citizens
must stop at a government checkpoint, and receive a "green light" before being allowed to leave their local area." It would certainly make it appear that the movement of every citizen is carefully monitored by the Government, and only allowed if given a green light.
(This was actually done by a U.S. television station to display exactly how EASY it would be to make a propaganda tape in ANY country
showing whatever degree of Government control desired.)

Rather accidental or intentional, it is because of these misconceptions the value of input by people like yourself who have
recently been to China is so valuable to me, and I believe to all who
read this board.

Thank You,

Doug
