Yeah, that is a big problem seldom discussed about stops. In many cases, the big movement down is due to news after the close and prior to the open. I don't know if you can have stops work in the post and pre. I bailed in the pre this AM at 49.55. It was over 50 in the pre prior to my selling, and decreased to near the open price in the 47.70 region or so (IIRC). Of course it also got higher during the day...

I had toyed near the close on Friday (stock around 53.25 or so) with selling this weeks calls at 50.0 strike, to protect against another $3 fall. They had about 60cents of premium, so I would have been capping at about 53.85 or so (IIRC) on the upside and protecting against falling to 50. It would have been very nice to have done that with 45's instead. They must have had only 30 cents of premium (maybe less), but you could have picked up >$5 at the open...
