Here's how I'd deal with it. The lawn wasn't mowed last week. You understand my standards, you met them previously and now you're not. Is there a reason why you're not doing your job? If he says yes, then go in that direction. If he says it'll never happen again and it happens again, then a second warning letting him know his pay will be docked etc. I'd give him a chance to quit if he's not happy with his job and then expect him to do as I want to find another job. You can bet your bottom dollar we'd have an understanding we could both work with.
