I rarely read complete books anymore, but the city library here has your mom's book so I borrowed it to read about that famous 1927 escape across the Gobi desert from China to the Soviet Union.

It reminds me of one of my favorite escape books: Seven Years in Tibet by Heinrich Harrer. It was made into a movie starring Brad Pitt.

I also enjoyed this tale about a group of political prisoners who escaped from Stalin's gulag across the Gobi to Tibet and then down into India...
