The problem IMHO is that the USA has zero coordinated response to CV-19, unlike say China and SK. So having the President who many people admire suggest that its a "hoax" and that many people get better by sitting around and going to work is going to nicely facilitate spreading it. Coupled with lack of universal medical care and many people lacking any sick time from work, we have a nice prescription for spreading a pandemic, when as Trump correctly noted, it is mild for many people.

Just think about that for a few minutes before responding: 1) A pandemic with say 5% fatalities for older people, 2) very mild symptoms for many younger working age people, 3) many younger working age people lacking affordable healthcare and dependent on the next paycheck, and 4) a President who wants to downplay any disruption because he needs the stock market and the economy to stay high and (I see the flames coming) he hints to his not overly science friendly base that they should ignore the experts and listen to his gut on the subject instead, 5) a national streak of independence where most people don't want intrusive government interference in their lives so the response seems to be to self-isolate if you are responsible and think you have symptoms. Its essentially a Prisoners Dilemma situation for many younger individuals: If I get it, it pays me to ignore things and continue as normal, because the odds are that for me its mild and nobody will know I have it, whereas if I seek testing it will cost me substantially in medical fees and lost work. What to do??

IMHO, the good news is that I think it doesn't spread terribly easily. But I don't really have a lot to back up that WAG.
