Sure. People will do what people will do. In reality, the majority of the population doesn't hang on every word the president utters (regardless of who is in office) or the intentional misrepresentations thereof. Just don't let human nature or facts get in the way of a doomsday narrative. It's not like the administration's response was any earlier or more comprehensive than, say, the response to SARS. Oh, wait...

It's telling that your response was that Trump's observations were 100% correct, but the problem is that he didn't then demand that everybody barricade themselves in isolation at the slightest hint of any odd feelings. A demand which would have gone unheard or disregarded by the vast majority.

After the last half-dozen or so world-ending pandemic "scares", I will go on living my life as if the sun will rise tomorrow.

And a President who belittles the threat, and has lots of followers who are inclined to disparage science.

The President has a responsibility to balance response and preparedness with undue fear -- as the data changes.
