As far as I know any U.S. firm can purchase HK stocks. (If you are in
Canada, you can deal direct through HSBC discount trading, or others.)

I do not have an account in HK. I deal with a a U.S. discount firm.
It does not matter which one. As I understand it, (and I only know
what little I have read & been told), the vast majority of HK trades
end up being routed through one of 3 U.S. firms, regardless of where
your trade originates.

I have heard rumors of other ways to trade, but I am not a trader.
I buy & hold.

I wish I could be of more help, but I have never had any problems
buying or selling foreign securities that have made me want to look
for alternatives.
