When it comes to income taxes, New York State is very tax-friendly for retirees. All Social Security retirement benefits are exempt from taxation. Income from retirement accounts or a private pension is deductible up to $20,000.

.In NYS my IRA and 401K dividends are taxable, but my SS is exempt. In NYS my IBM pension gets a 20K exclusion.

State Income Tax New York is one of 36 states that do not impose any income tax on Social Security benefits. At the time of publication, the only states that do tax Social Security benefits are Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, West Virginia, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah.
