FWIW, I thought all the "flu" are related. Some find homes in different hosts: Bird, bat, rodents, swine, monkeys or apes, etc. There are even viri that infect bacteria. One nice thing, these new viri have not had time to become resistant to drugs that may work for a while.

They usually are seasonal, winter stressing most species of host.

I think the reason new strains of flu harm the elderly more is because having lived through previous infections immunity/recognition is built up for the previous strains encountered. Something new when you are old is more problematic. When you are born part of the deal is you will die. You get old, life becomes a bitch then it ends.

Feed a cold and starve a fever.
