That's a good question, and if one can trust China Daily, a govt. media agency, it's been investigated and the conclusion was that children are not transmitting the virus. I think the conclusions were based, at least in part, on epidemiology studies.

As I understand it, it's not that children are asymptomatic, or unaffected as you say, it's that the virus is not taking hold in children, i.e. they aren't catching the illness. Perhaps their immune system is fighting it off.

Or it could be this dynamic which I read in a different Asia media source: the claim that this virus lodges in lung tissue, not in the nose or throat tissues. The younger a child is, it's lungs don't have sufficient receptor cells for the virus to attach to. As a child grows, these unique receptor cells mature.

The most recent data I could find is that there are still no recorded deaths in children under 15 and no recorded cases in children under 9. And the NE Journal of Medicine stated that the infection rate in children under the age of 19 is only 0.9%.

Everything's is so fluid right now, but this data for now suggests that school closings aren't called for when you weigh them against the hardship it causes working parents of the youngest school age children.

Another thing. It occurs to me that if children aren't somehow super resistant to this virus, we might see cluster breakouts happening in daycare centers. The workers try hard to maintain sanitary conditions, but toddlers don't comply, lol. So far nothing is happening.
