The thing about all first gen LEO systems, I don't think they were viable for the continental US. Maybe offshore oil industry, but for the rest, nah. Too many options. The only thing that the US could offer is data. High speed data, which is still having other options. I suspect that Wintel gorilla is getting the telco's to offer two DSL's to the consumer; 768 Kbps bidirectional or 1.5 Mbps one way.
Seems that things are heating up on that front. It even put's pressure on Teledesic.
