<<The new group was promising to standardize the technology and fully cooperate with the telephone companies. And perhaps most important, the computer companies said they would take responsibility for most marketing and retail distribution.

The phone companies would still have to spend up to $1,000 a line upgrading their equipment to handle the faster flow of data. But with retail prices for the service expected to be at least $40 a month, those costs could be recovered fairly quickly.>> nyt 1.20.98

even after the rbocs digest the loss of Ti, presumably.

so, mason, what would be the after the fact consequences of the
babies dragging their feet: assuming the triumvirate does take up the
selling /marketing expense slack...i mean dragging even to make it
laughable to offer the modems: forget standardized options. it would
be catastrophic.

do you not think there are in place, already, some assurances,
or some actual groundworkable solutions for making the modems
viable. something to twist the arms, so to speak, of the babies.

wouldn't this be much ado about nothing without such assurances...
making the idea of cable modems look good again wouldn't exactly
make our trio look very savvy.

i offer this because i am at a loss to explain how they can accept
anything less than a "done almost" deal from the rbocs; what alliance
would otherwise exist, were the lines not deployed in a reasonably
timely fashion?
