rdww: ratio of gold in reserve/$US

Total money = including cash, bonds & other debt paper

1940, gold holdings were 38% of Total money
Also had double the amount of gold in reserves
Gold was valued at $35./ounce

1997, gold holdings/Treasury debt = 1.57%
gold valued at $320./ounce

The 1997 figure is national US debt only, not including cash, State debt, private debt, unfunded liabilities etc.

I have seen the figures in respect to cash ($US) only, but do not have them at hand. Interestingly there is much more $US cash floating around the world outside the US than at home.

US gold reserves are worth about 83.84 Billion dollars. All CB holdings are worth $352 Billion dollars (@320./oz)

There is much more US cash than all the gold in all the banks.
