You need to bone up on the history of UNIX. AT&T no longer
has a comerical interest in UNIX, outside of buying it for
their own use. UNIX System V is now owned, I think, by SCO.
AT&T (Bell Labs) rolled it out to an independent company,
that was then sold to Novell and was then sold to SCO.

As far as correcting security problems and cash being an asset,
it doesn't seem to help MS much.
