NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS ARTICULATES STRATEGY TO MORE EFFECTIVELY
ADDRESS NEEDS OF ENTERPRISE MARKET

Focusing on Strengths and Teaming with Industry Leader 3Com,

Newbridge Optimizing Efforts in Enterprise Space

KANATA, Ont. Jan. 26 /CNW/ - Newbridge Networks today announced a three-tiered
strategy to more effectively address the enterprise market. Newbridge will utilize its new
alliance with 3Com Corporation (COMS.O), also announced today, to round out its product
portfolio and provide an evolution path for existing Newbridge(R) Enterprise LAN Distribution
(ELD) customers to emerging technologies; concentrate development efforts on its
market-leading core competencies, and stream its sales force to segments of the enterprise
market where it has the best opportunity to satisfy customer requirements.

In effect, the 3Com/Newbridge Alliance future proofs our existing ELD customers' investment
in Newbridge products, ensuring that their networks are growing to meet emerging needs,'' said
Peter Charbonneau, President and Chief Operating Officer, Newbridge Networks. New
additions to their networks will be viable components that incorporate the latest in technology
breakthroughs.''

Newbridge will continue its support for the current generation of its ELD products, following
through with product plans and delivering on customer commitments. Those existing ELD
customers who choose to evolve their networks to emerging technologies will be offered a
migration path that includes 3Com products. The Newbridge enterprise management platform
will evolve to manage Newbridge and 3Com legacy products, as well as future
3Com/Newbridge Alliance products.

Another critical benefit of the 3Com/Newbridge Alliance is that 3Com's industry-leading LAN
and WAN access product portfolio widens and enriches the Newbridge enterprise offering,
while 3Com has access to the Newbridge switched routing solution.

A more concentrated approach to research and development is another aspect of the new
strategy. Newbridge R&D staff will give the company's traditional product strengths - wide
area network (WAN) core and access products, switched routing and network and service
management - the largest share of their attention. Newbridge has been recognized as an
industry leader across the scope of WAN products, from time division multiplexing to WAN
packet products. The Newbridge switched routing system remains the industry's leading
Multiprotocol-over-ATM-based, Layer 3 switching system, eliminating the performance
bottlenecks and management complexity of conventional router network designs. And, from the
start, Newbridge has displayed a commitment to end-to-end network and service management.

Newbridge will attempt to optimize its return on channels investment by, again, concentrating on
areas of strength, companies at the high end of the enterprise market.

Newbridge has always been a major player in the enterprise market. Global Fortune 1000
companies have accounted for about a third of the company's revenue since its founding in
1986, and we have worked diligently to develop a broad enterprise product portfolio, ranging
from standards-based, Layer 3 switched routing to time division multiplexing and access wide
area network (WAN) products,'' Charbonneau said. Now, as requirements of the enterprise
market evolve, our commitment to those customers is intensifying. The market is demanding
standards-based, next-generation, end-to-end networks provided by a single point of contact.
The steps we are taking now - our alliance with 3Com being a very important one - will provide
us with the industry's best answer to every one of those customer needs. This strategy will
make us a more attractive partner to a wider variety of enterprise customers, while also
future-proofing the investments of our existing enterprise customers.''
