I think Greta Thunberg is behind this. The virus is suspiciously designed to exterminate old farts, thus shorten the average lifespan of humans, slow the world population growth, and give the world a chance to recover, with a younger population on average more concerned about the planet's future and more amenable to do something meaningful to prevent disruptive climate change and the further destruction of the natural world.

Or perhaps, more likely, it is the Gaia hypothesis at work.
