John,

RE: "That is, get in on the low end, price aggressively, and take share from the existing high end providers, essentially creating another business/profit center for CPQ, away from the boxmaking business? Sounds like a plan to me...."

Who provides service at the "high end". IBM, HWP, UIS, NCR ....., I don't think Compaq will provide services on their boxes. THis was a move to provide CPQ with "in-house" services for big boxes of their own. This is to compete in the Bigger iron services/support area... so they can sell bigger iron to Larger customers who want premier on-site services... i.e. A serviceman on site in two hours or less when there is a system problem.
