I suspect people who invented the brace and people who perform the surgery have never worn the brace. LOL
I suspect that these people have seen more than one case and know how badly it can turn out if one does not use the brace. Having had multiple orthopedic surgeries, with uncomfortable braces and extensive physical therapy, I'd advise using what they give you. Might be past that, oh well.

Up side is you recover as much use as possible, never 100%, for the remainder of your life.
Downside is that you have a chronic condition, pain and discomfort, for the rest of your life.

Actually, pain and discomfort is part of the deal regardless, but more in the beginning leaves less later.
