Mindmeld, there were several stretches in logic that the author deployed, but the gist of that article is undeniable.

One thing that will be hotly debated is the balance between individual rights and freedoms, and state control in times of crisis like the coronavirus pandemic.

For example, in South Korea, now being held up as a model for coronavirus containment, people there have few rights to privacy. Everyone's movement is tracked, which means when someone tests positive for the virus, that person's whereabouts can easily be backtraced and appropriate measures taken.

And although Koreans are generally capitalist and democratic, they all have a sense of sacrificing their own lives and freedoms for the greater good.

Finally, I hear that if you get infected in Korea, there is a social stigma assigned to you because somehow it's your fault that you got infected and that you potentially spread your infection to others.

All three of these characteristics are generally considered un-American here, depending on your political alignment. How we deal with that is going to be hotly debated over the next year.
