Jim, one of the themes running through this tacky episode in American history is that presidents are held to higher standards of conduct by the American people than others are. He is the chief law enforcement officer of the land, for example. While in the case of past presidents it is true that they had affairs, they managed to keep their private sexual relationships private, and were discreet enough that they didn't have women dragging them into court. John Kennedy, Jr. has said publicly that in these days of heightened morality and less privacy for the president, his father would perhaps not have run for the office. While you can argue that we might miss out on a few good national leaders, certainly Bill Clinton was well aware of what the rules were, and it looks as if he may have violated them fragrantly.
