Vincent,
I believe when Eckard opened his mouth regarding the $50 billion he knew exactly which company he wanted to buy and why.

It seems to me, a lot of the top tech companies are positioning themselves to be the one stop shopping and service source for whatever it is they happen to sell. For example, CSCO has done/is doing it in networking. The path CPQ is following appears to be fundamentally correct. Large companies, like the one I work for, want to deal with companies large enough to provide the product as well as service, soup to nuts. They want to dial one number. They want to have clout with that product provider. They want the vendor to pay attention to them, provide service right away, AND they are willing to pay big bucks for that to happen.

The positioning CPQ is doing, to me, is the right thing to do. The only question I have, is DEC the right company to provide what CPQ and Eckard are looking for. I do not know enough about DEC to say. -Keith-
