Early in an epidemic the deaths to recovered ratio will greatly overestimate the ultimate rate of deaths as it takes longer for patients to recover than to die.

Right. But the US is not in the early stages. It has been months.

Besides, if we still have statistics similar to the early stages, then we are really, really screwed.
