Ibexx,

This is incredible technology, but in the discussions of layer 2 vs layer 3 switching - this is a layer 1 technology. Its simply a physical medium and has no near-term competitive impact on cisco.

This does fit into Lucents patent portfolio, that when licensed to others makes billions for them. It also fits into their SONET infastructure equipment sales. Watch out Ciena!

What Nortel is attempting is to marry their proven SONET infastructure with new/to-be developed layer 3 technology. What cisco is attempting is to join our proven layer 3 technology with SONET (hence the Skystone acquisistion). Lucent has not articulated any interest in the convergence of these layers.

Who will win? Well in telecom, as opposed to data market, their are a lot of players besides the North Americans ( eg Alcatel, Siemens, Nokia, Ericson, Fujitsu), so their is room for more than one winner.

Never count out Lucent - they have too much R&D - but I think we can become one of the big boys :-)
