My sense is it is sooner rather than later that these shutdowns begin to end. This simply cannot go on. A two week “time out” makes sense.
Two weeks seems optimistic IMO. I have a friend who is an American Airline's pilot. He told me they have over 400 airplanes parked right now and are losing $50 million a day. They have a lot of cash, over 8 billion, but with a lot of debt. Even they can't take a prolonged pause because it might mean more planes get parked.

The Chinese, overwhelmed and shocked by an explosion of disease and deaths in Wuhan, set the pattern which is basically followed by governments in other countries. Something similar happened in Italy - and their response followed (and reinforced) the Wuhan pattern. I think the underlying problem was similar in both places - namely, they allowed large numbers of mostly mild CoViD cases to build up - before realizing that they’re having a major breakout. Part of the issue in Italy is the tradition of having multigenerational households - with the young, apparently, infecting the old.

This article in The Guardian gives a glimpse of how things look on “the other side” of the lockdowns, in China.
