Yeah old Kit roamed that area. where we lived for 10 years by the way in the Carson Valley. and Carson pass on Highway 88 is also named after him. This was the way around Donner and its troublesome wall of granite. The Mormans where in Nevada as well as Utah. they used a route similar to 88 to go back to Utah for the war that never happened with the US when they left California. I love driving 88 cause it gets high, three passes at 8000 feet or higher and because its an old type 2 lane road and also gets a lot of snow. Kirkwood is along the way and my favorite for back country skiing - Red Lakes Peak. Park at 8600 feet, climb to almost 10,000 ft and ski down to Hope Valley at 7500 feet; earn those turns. but almost get a 2 for one return. Needs two cars or good luck hitching.
