Sam,

Why would you get pneumonia when you fracture a rib? A punctured lung?

Rep. Mark DeSaulnier declines to 'critical condition' in pneumonia fight
Broken ribs are very painful and people don't take deep breaths because of the pain. Secretions can build up and airways may close if you don't take deep breaths which make you more susceptible to infection. It is the reason why they have you do incentive spirometry after many surgeries, especially the painful surgeries where you may not want to breath deeply, especially if you are older, to keep your airways open and not allowing excessive secretions to build up as well as not allowing excessive bacteria to build up which will lead to pneumonia

NAG gives a very good explanation.
