I don’t know what is meant by “recovered” - clinical? Do they show negative test for the virus X2? Are they people discharged from the hospitals? And, does the term mean the same thing in different countries?

Until they bother to define the term, there doesn’t seem to be a point in dwelling on it. (Maybe they did, but I haven’t seen it).

"Why recovery rate is low in US" To show recovered one needs two negative tests. Given slowness of testing and availability of tests they are probably saving the tests for uncertain cases rather than using them to prove recovered.

There must be thousands of people who had the virus for a few days and have recovered.

Because "recovered" is only a subset of confirmed cases. That is, generally people who have walked into the ER with severe symptoms and are known confirmed cases, and have recovered after treatment.
