The problem is primarily organizational... both structural and behavioral. True in the sense of self interest being enabled in organizing outside of good faith... generally. I always put it in context of free markets with the definition as: no fraud, no monopoly, and no barriers to participation... still also requiring good faith and cooperation in accepting those as the rules in the competition. The assumption that there is competition... in a free market sense... is just wrong, now. We don't have a free market. And the cost to humanity in result... is huge. Innovation is mostly suppressed in result... and innovators quit trying as "success" enables nothing but a right to apply for a license that enables tilting at windmills. Good ideas are suppressed, now... only because the old ones are profitable... and the big companies have the market power... and the cooperation of officialdom... to suppress the competition and preserve that extant profitability. Otherwise, if the new is both revolutionary and unavoidable, there is also flagrant theft... The history of the laser and its inventor... the patent fights ? If you bother to revolutionize an industry or create a new one as a young man... it might take you the rest of your life to succeed in forcing others to acknowledge that success... if you do live long enough ? And, is that how you want to live your life ? Without a meritocracy... you get a plutocracy... which can wear any mask it chooses...
