OT/ I'll be nice and say to much bureaucracy <G> Incompetence is still on the table, depending on what happens next. They should lock down the entire country and flatten the curve. But I fear the root of all evil will rear its ugly head.

O/T I was talking with my wife about this tonight. About 10-years ago I spoke for a few hours with someone who had been a high level civil servant for many administrations, and they quit because things had just become so politicized within the agency.

Starting with 2001, political operatives inside agencies increased immensely according to them, and their influence over time sometimes warped their mission.

They said it continued in 2009, and I have no doubt it continues to this date.

The response of the agencies may have been politicized to the point of adversely affecting their missions. I have no doubt there were plenty of people in all the major centers responsible for this type of situation that were ready with plans, but were thwarted or shouted down. the Intelligence Community was briefing people on this in mid-January, so it's not like it came out of nowhere.

It's no secret that those in power are looking to roll back regulations. You empty out agencies and voila. The EPA has been gutted. A sibling had to fly into Asia, with other participants coming from Europe, to discuss an environmental issue of concern to all. A month later another conference had someone come up positive with Corona. For a moment think about all the participants and all the connecting flights home.

You're old enough to remember the government folding the Asia desk during the Joseph McCarthy era. Then when Nixon, who sat on the inquisition table decided to open a channel with China again, there was no desk to brief him.

Wonder how much of the gvmnt fails was due to politely meddling.
