Western companies farmed out most of the burden of operating the capitalist economy to China.

Basically saying: Let the Chinese deal with the real economy and we deal with making money with money.
Result: China industrialized. The West financialized.
It is surprising that the status quo worked for so long. I thought the pendulum would have reverted sooner. But it didn't.

Trump got elected and the US started looking into the over dependence of China.
Covid-19 will give much more power to Trump's administration goals of reverting dependency on China Inc.
