Tenchu's Thoughts: The People's Cure for the Coronavirus

My wife just sent me the following article from commondreams.org:

Sanders Demands Trump Rescind 'Truly Outrageous' Decision to Hand Gilead Exclusive Rights Over Possible Coronavirus Treatment

"We must put human life above corporate profit. We cannot give pharmaceutical corporations a monopoly on treatments that could save millions of people during this crisis."

Can you believe this asshole? It's this "corporate profit" thing that will help develop a treatment for something that doctors have repeatedly said there is no treatment for.

But first of all, let's mention the drug in question, which is called Remdesivir. This drug may show some results against COVID-19:

Northern California woman recovers from coronavirus after being treated with remdesivir

(The drug was originally developed in response to Ebola, but it didn't seem to work with that particular disease. Now they're bringing it back to see if it can work against the coronavirus.)

Now let's go over the blatant lie here. Trump was NOT the one who granted Gilead exclusive rights to Remdesivir.

Instead, this is already written in law. You know, the law that Congress is supposed to write.

You know, the law that Congress is supposed to be familiar with.

You know, the Congress that Bernie Sanders himself spent 30 years in.

Every new drug is given a seven year exclusivity protection to the developer. This is why billions of dollars are poured into new drug research and development here in America. The developers are allowed to make a big profit off of any new drug.

It's this profit motive that Bernie Sanders thinks is oh-so-evil, especially at a time like this.

And Bernie thinks it's OK to blatantly lie to the American people because he supposedly cares more and has been fighting for the American people all of his life.

But this was never a decision made by the Trump administration. Instead, it was the FDA, and the FDA was following established procedure. Trump didn't call up the people at the FDA and say, "You know my friends in Gilead? They have this drug that could treat the coronavirus. Give them exclusive rights to it, because I want them to become rich at the expense of suffering patients!"

In other words, the FDA would have done the same thing under Obama. Or under a hypothetical Hillary administration. But that's not stopping CommonDreams.org from saying "Trump's FDA."

But wait! There's more ...

Because of the coronavirus outbreak, Gilead donated some samples of Remdesivir to labs in China in order to see if it has any effect. That's not only standard procedure, since it makes complete sense to try out a potential treatment in the source of an epidemic, but it's also pretty generous of Gilead.

Guess what? China then turns around and files a patent for Gilead's drug:

Bay Area-Based Gilead Sees Potential Legal Conflict With China Over Its Coronavirus Drug

This is a complete backstab by the Chinese government, and it underscores exactly why China should not be trusted when it comes to intellectual property.

Of course, communist China will do communist things. They will suppress the media, they will lie, cheat, and steal whatever they need in order to get ahead, and they will do it in a way that makes President for Life Xi Jinping look like a hero.

And this is what Bernie wants for America.

It's not just Bernie, of course. I'm pretty sure Joe "You're full of shit" Biden will also come around and demand that Gilead give up their rights to Remdesivir. I'm sure the NYTimes and "Democracy Dies In Darkness" will demand that Gilead become a charity, if Remdesivir shows any positive results whatsoever.

In light of this, and in light of China backstabbing America and telling the whole world that they are the new "evil empire," Trump's insistence in calling this the "Chinese coronavirus" starts to make more sense. (I still don't think that's the correct priority call right now, but whatever.)

But is THIS the future that Bernie and the Democrats, especially the so-called "progressives," want for America?

Seems to me that if Remdesivir actually works against the coronavirus, capitalism will be the savior of us all. And I say this because after SARS, MERS, H1N1, and all the other pandemics that Asia had to deal with, there has been NO shortage of research and development into antiviral drugs that can help stop the next pandemic.

Yet here we have an American company, Gilead, with a drug that might show some promise. If those promises bear fruit (and that's a big IF), then once again American ingenuity and American entrepreneurialism will have provided us with life-saving treatments.

And then we'll see that capitalism, with all of its oh-so-greedy profits and its oh-so-greedy billionaire CEOs, is actually the most humane economic system out there.
