[Alcatel Welcomes Universal ADSL Working Group Announcement] WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 26, 1998--"As the world leader in deployed ADSL networks, Alcatel has been supporting this initiative to foster the growth and consumer availability of this barrier-breaking technology," said Jo Cornu, Alcatel COO. "Alcatel particularly supports the effort to extend the existing internationally-recognized ADSL standard (T1.413) to this new service because it will permit the creation of different levels of services based on a common standard. This is in the interest of everyone: the computer industry, service providers, telecommunications equipment manufacturers, and -- most importantly -- consumers. "Alcatel has taken many steps to ensure ADSL equipment interoperability among all participants at different areas in the network and the customer premises. Our participation in this group is in line with this effort, which has led to many positive developments thus far. We look forward to working with the current and future members of the UAWG to bring the Group's goals to fruition," continued Cornu. Alcatel announced in December a successful demonstration of ADSL "lite" and "splitterless" products. These products expand the range of rate-adaptive services offered via the Alcatel "1000 ADSL" product family, compatible with all standard-compliant (T1.413) equipment. This development helps ensure mass-market availability of high-speed Internet access based on a single, standardized ADSL technology. Service providers, therefore, will have a wide range of options for ADSL service -- from several hundreds of kilobits to multiple megabits, with or without POTS splitters at the subscriber site. Service providers or consumers always have the option to install a POTS splitter to offer "full rate" ADSL.. To meet a request from its U.S. carrier customers, Alcatel has designed a customer-installable splitter that permits re-use of in-home wiring. Alcatel will support ADSL lite on its third-generation ADSL DSLAM (digital subscriber line access multiplexer), soon to be shipped to customers. Alcatel has a leading position for the supply of ADSL equipment on the world market. In recent months, Alcatel has delivered and installed its ADSL equipment at Ameritech, BellSouth, Pacific Bell and Southwestern Bell in the United States; Singapore Telecom; Bell Canada; and Belgacom, British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, Telefonica (Spain), and Telia (Sweden) in Europe. Alcatel and Intel demonstrated at last Fall's Comdex show an ADSL modem prototype that connects to a personal computer's Universal Serial Bus (USB). Alcatel and Microsoft recently have published a paper about ADSL service issues and network protocols. Alcatel's ADSL products are based on its own ADSL chipset, which is being made available for licensing and sale to other industry partners in order to speed up the availability of ADSL products. Alcatel, the Telecom segment of Alcatel Alsthom, designs, manufactures, and markets complete telecommunications systems. Activities include fixed switching networks, transmission systems, access systems, mobile communications infrastructure, business networking, submarine cable networks, as well as radiocommunications, space, and defense systems. With operations in over 130 countries, Alcatel is a leading-edge supplier in the majority of its businesses. In 1996, these activities registered total sales of FF 71 billion ($13.65 billion).
